Does Drinking More Water Protect Your Teeth?

It’s a common question people ask. The answer is yes and no! Why? Because if we’re just drinking lots of water but don’t brush or floss daily, then the water isn’t going to protect our teeth from plaque buildup. Or, if we’re drinking a lot of water but play intensive contact sports without a mouthguard. Well, water won’t save us there either!

However, there are many benefits of drinking water for our oral health, including:

• It washes away food and dilutes the acids produced by the bacteria in our mouth
• Keeps away dry mouth by staying hydrated and fresh
• Strengthens our enamel from the natural fluoride in water
• There are zero calories in water, making it a healthy substitute for sugary drinks

Along with drinking plenty of water in our diets, it’s also important to have regular checkups and cleans by your dentist.
