Visiting Somewhere Chilly?

Do you have a trip planned to somewhere cold? Make sure you stay warm—and take care of your teeth. Here’s how you can protect your teeth during frigid weather.

Stay hydrated. Your water intake is just as important in cold weather as it is during warm weather. This keeps your gums moist and allows you to produce the correct amount of saliva.

Limit your time outdoors. Like most other materials, our teeth expand and contract in warm and cold temperatures. A sudden, extreme change in temperature can cause small fractures in teeth.

Reduce acidic foods. If you have sensitive teeth in normal weather, you’ll want to be especially choosy when it comes to the foods you eat in cold climes. Choose foods that are low in acid. Why? Cold weather can agitate sensitive teeth, and when you eat acidic foods it can make your teeth even more uncomfortable.
